BEARS ON THE ROAD

When it comes to board games, the box is more than just packaging—it’s the first thing players see. It’s what makes someone pick up the game from a shelf, so getting it right is crucial. For Dodeka, we wanted the box design to reflect the same clear and simple style as our cards while also hinting at the theme and conflict of the game.

Our first round of designs used existing artwork and incorporated Greek pillars to bring the theme across. But the feedback wasn’t what we hoped for—it was clear we needed to step things up. We realized that a dedicated art piece was the way forward.

Luc took on the challenge and created a clean, simple design that looked cool, but our agent wasn’t convinced. He told us bluntly: this wouldn’t sell. We were a bit stuck and unsure which direction to take next, so we decided to explore three entirely new approaches. Two of them passed the agent’s approval, and we chose one to move forward with.

The result was fantastic. It captured the spirit of Dodeka, looked great next to the card artwork, and gave the game a face we could be proud of. Designing the box reminded us that even when the process feels uncertain, exploring multiple directions can lead to the perfect solution.
